WHAT IS WIRELESS BROADBAND?

Wireless broadband is delivered over the 4G network (instead of through underground cables like copper or fibre). It’s an excellent option if your area doesn’t have fibre infrastructure. Available in most places where there is 4G coverage, Mercury’s wireless broadband is super simple to set up and all plans come with a router, so getting up and running is a breeze.


Wireless Speeds
As a rule, average peak time speeds are typically faster than an ADSL copper connection, but not as fast as fibre. There are a number of factors that can impact internet speeds including the location of your home and router, age of devices, number of devices connected, and internet traffic.

**1,000GB and 300GB data plans run at maximum speed to data threshold, then are throttled to 5Mbps until the plan renews. 120GB plan is capped and once data cap has been reached, service will stop until the plan renews, unless data packs are purchased to continue service at maximum speed.

Factors that may influence your broadband speed include the device you are using and its capabilities, your operating system and web-browser, if you’re connecting wirelessly to your router, and the number of devices connecting via WiFi. If your plan uses a wireless broadband connection, then factors such as the distance you are from a cell tower, the network capability and the overall use of that cell tower by other consumers can impact the speed experienced. For wireless broadband, you must use the router supplied by Mercury. This router is capable of providing the estimated peak time average speeds, subject to the factors described above. Speeds shown are the Spark national average speeds for Wireless Broadband at peak times measured using Smart Modem 2 (source: MBNZ Report 21, September 2024). You may experience a higher or lower speed than this.

Add-Ons and Auto Allowance Packs (120GB Plan Only)

If you have a capped wireless broadband plan and use up your monthly base plan data, to keep you online you will have one 10GB extra data pack automatically added and charged to your account. If you use all your base plan data as well as this additional Auto Allowance, your broadband service will stop (until your monthly plan renews) unless you top up manually with an Add-On pack. We recommend purchasing Add-On pack when needed as they provide you with great value for money. They need to be manually purchased by you and do not automatically renew each month. Is Wireless Broadband right for me?

As Wireless Broadband does not use a copper or Fibre connection, instead using the cellular network to deliver internet services, it may be a good option for you if:

  • You have a poor-quality DSL connection.
  • Your area doesn't have copper or Fibre infrastructure but does have cellular tower capacity.
  • If you can get Fibre but you can't/don't want to dig up your ground for cabling.

However, as our Wireless Broadband plans are capped (unlimited plans aren't available), it's important to keep this in mind when deciding on your service type. If you're after an unlimited plan, check out our ADSL/VDSL, or Fibre broadband solutions.

How can I keep track of my data usage?

You can add extra data to your plan by logging into My Account, or via our Mercury App. Otherwise, chat with us now and our team will get this sorted for you. 

 

What happens to my unused data at the end of the month?

Any unused base plan data remaining at the end of the billing period will not carry forward. 

Any data purchased as an additional 10GB data pack, either manually or as part of an automatic pack, is available for 30 days from the date of purchase, and unused data will be lost at the end of the 30-day period. 

When your plan renews, the oldest data will be used first.
