I help to deliver Mercury’s sustainability disclosures, whilst looking at global and national trends in energy. Part of my role is to grow the culture of sustainability within Mercury whilst delivering different initiatives and supporting Mercury’s strategic direction. I get a load of variety with my role, and work with stakeholders across the organisation, as well as externally.
Every day brings a fresh challenge and opportunity to learn. I have had a diverse journey, from the Customer Engagement Centre to Risk Control and Process Improvement roles before landing my current gig as a Sustainability and Strategy Analyst. The opportunity for me to develop my skillset and grow my career within one organisation has been excellent; I get to explore new pathways whilst Mercury also gives me the space to Chair the Young Energy Professionals Network, broadening my exposure to the energy sector.
Cliché, but forward-looking – Mercury is an evolving company in an ever-evolving sector. There’s a dynamic blend of adaptability, growth and support – I constantly have learning opportunities to keep me ahead of the curve. I have had the privilege of moving through various roles, learning and upskilling as I go. Flexibility is prioritised beyond working locations, I do a 9-day fortnight – which is great for my work-life balance!
I’m currently working at our Mokai Geothermal site as a Mechanical Maintainer. I’m part of a team who are responsible for maintaining the geothermal power plant, looking after the station, making sure the machines are running properly, providing maintenance on the equipment – we are the eyes and ears of the station. Previously I’d attended welding school after finishing high school and became a contractor for Mercury onsite – this opened my eyes to a world of opportunity within the energy sector and was excited to be offered a permanent position.
Getting to learn about geothermal energy and exposure to geothermal side of engineering. When there is a breakdown, the team use it as a learning opportunity. Everyone is there to help and share their knowledge, the operators, the engineers, you’re not left alone to try and solve something by yourself because everyone is there working towards the same goal to get the machines up and running to provide power to the grid.
It’s tight knit team where everyone works together. We celebrate success and it’s really family friendly. There is great work/life balance and there is the opportunity to work overtime for time in lieu, but it’s not compulsory and your family comes first. It’s also really safety driven, everything is done to ensure you go home safely at the end of the day.
Our Attitude helps us to shape how we show up every day and contribute to realising our purpose and achieving our long-term aspirations.
Care - Doing what's right.
Commit – Taking ownership.
Connect – Working together.
Curious – Exploring possibilities. When we care, commit, connect and bring our curiosity, we can make a real difference together.
We've joined a network of over 300 other organisations who have also taken this step. With this visible commitment, we will expand our network and create more opportunities for our rainbow community, including our internal Pride Network, to connect with businesses across the motu. This pledge underscores our genuine dedication to the safety, visibility, and inclusion of our rainbow communities. Rainbow inclusion is an ongoing journey, not a destination. This pledge marks a significant milestone for Mercury on this path.
